Reading Notes: Saint and Animals, Part B

The story about the sea caught my attention the whole way through. There's just something sea life through the calm and chaos that draws me in. Back in middle in high school I read a bunch of fiction novels about mermaids and the stormy seas. This brought back memories.

Tarzan's foster mom with Jane and Tarzan by Divo Eterno
Immediately, the Wolf-Mother of Saint Ailbe started off saddening. The mother and father left their baby on a mountain to fend for himself. When the wolf became Ailbe’s second mom, I thought of Tarzan and how he was raised by gorillas. He adapted to his surroundings. Then hunters tried to take Tarzan away just like how this mysterious prince took him. I’m glad the wolf mother did not die like Kerchak, the dad gorilla, in Tarzan!

The Ballad is poem format instead of story/paragraphs. There is an ABAB style. I love rhymes, but they can be more difficult to understand and interpret. The introduction to all the ballads start off nicely. It sets the tone of the rest of the story. This style of writing is more elegant to see, but again it is hard to comprehend what is happening because I get caught up in the different way of speaking.

Saint Francis stood for charity and peace. This is more on the religious side: saint, preach, holy, god, lord.

Reading Notes: Saint and Animals, Part A

Bullying by Elizabet21
This poor kid is getting bullied. Why are kids so hateful towards each other? Just because someone exceeds normal expectations, it is not acceptable to dislike them for being more studious and successful. I see this as a way for them to vent their jealousy. I can imagine doing something with this story because it kind of hits home. Not sure what kind of twists to do with it yet though.

The level of respect animals had for Saint Blaise is astounding. I like how various animals were listed. Not really religious to know how being Christian put him to prison… is it because he was a good man who healed people and animals out of the goodness of his heart?

Description of beautiful sea life and the land around always makes me feel nostalgic. Saying water wrinkles and spatter is so satisfying for some reason. The verbs used are unique and really add to the story. This helps depict a picture in my head easier. “Pointed noses and quivering whisker.”

Grass can be juicy? Saint Berach’s story wasn’t as animal based as the others. Cows and wolfs were only mentioned in the beginning.

Feedback Thoughts

Keep Calm and Carry On by Karen Arnold

Getting feedback:
Why Rejection Hurts and What to Do About It

Immediately these articles spoke out to me because they relate to situations I deal with now and will deal with in the future for my Advertising career. There are times when I will get brutal feedback and even get rejected for my ideas and of course it hurts, but there are ways of going about handling these situations.

Getting harsh feedback and even getting rejected can fuel a motivation you never knew you had within. “We overcome a hurdle and grow stronger and more confident as a result,” said William Treseder. The tips mentioned, such as do not demonalize and embracing emotions, are things I think about but never really follow through with. Though rejection may hurt, knowing how to limit your feelings will help stabilize a quicker recovery. It’s a new year, so a fresh mindset couldn’t hurt.

Giving feedback:
The Difference between Praise That Promotes Narcissism vs. Healthy Self-Esteem
Key Characteristics of Better Learning Feedback

A characteristic that caught my eye the most is to be transparent and tangible; tangible being the key word here. I cannot even count the numerous times I have received feedback on things I frankly can’t do anything about. Being tangible is so vital when critiquing. It has to be approachable and make sense.

Not only does tangibility factor into a feedback, but narcissism is also an issue. There’s a tendency to get aggressive and violent, and no one should grow up bottling those emotions. Like the article states, narcissism can lead to failure. Being cautious of how you word things can make a world of difference. It's okay to criticize, but do it in a way that is helpful. Do not be a jerk.

Week 2 Storytelling: Echo

Abandoned dog by Alexas_Fotos

One late night, Echo escaped her backyard to wander the small town. She is known to be very curious and vocal when things are astray; however, she left without making a peep. After walking for a few hours through ominous back roads Echo discovered she got caught up in the moment and somehow ended up far away from home. As she tried to retrace her steps, Echo did not notice the midnight blue truck coming right at her.

BOOM.

The reckless driver didn’t even care to stop and check if she was okay.

The next morning a local in the next town over noticed wounded Echo on her way to work. Echo’s dog tag only said her name with no address or phone number to contact, so the stranger graciously swooped Echo up and dropped her off at the nearest animal shelter. Echo suffered severe injuries to her hind legs and rear end. One of her legs were not functional anymore because of the collision, so the doctors at the shelter opted to amputate it.

What was once bright and radiant golden, her whole body now appears gloomy and burnt orange. Echo was no longer the cheerful and friendly dog she once was. No smiles or excited barks. No more curiosity.

Days pass and Echo was slowly but surely recovering. She hobbled everywhere and her cuts are now just scabs. Her mood lifted ever so slightly, but she was still stuck in a sad rut. Soon enough Echo was put up for adoption because her owners never came to claim her. Maybe they did not recognize her or maybe they did not care enough to search for her; that is still a mystery.

A countless amount of people came and searched for a perfect puppy to take home, but no one seemed to care for the old mutts, much less a disabled one. All Echo wanted was a little attention. She would purposely sit against the cage in the most viewable area, but no one notices her. She let out a faint whimper every time someone walked right by her cage. Echo’s lost hope and now lay hidden in the back.

One time, a 6 year-old boy came up to her cage and screamed, “Is anyone here?” Echo barked excitedly in response and clumsily ran up to the boy. He sat down right in front of Echo’s cell. He started telling her a story about a time he had a dog just like her and how she died of old age. The little boy got up and asked the workers if he could play with her, and immediately they opened up the cage for him. This was the happiest Echo has been in months. Finally the affection she has been patiently waiting for.

The little boy’s mom came up to him and asked if he has found any dog that he liked. He frantically tried to convince his mother that he wanted Echo, but she profoundly was hesitant. She did not want him to have a dog so old and disabled. The boy lost the fight and they left empty handed… and Echo remained.

Though Echo did not understand what was being said, she knew she was rejected. She got her hopes up to just be left alone again.

A few weeks go by and one day an elderly man came in and stood by Echo’s cage. Echo vaguely looked up for a second then put her head back down. She didn’t think he was interested in her.

“Why do you hide from me?” he asked.

Echo looked up again realizing he was speaking to her. She walked over cautiously and let him pet her head. He mumbled some words to a worker nearby, and they slowly took her out of the cage. The man put a leash on Echo, and she thought she was just going for a walk. Little did Echo know, she was moving to her forever home.

Author’s Note:
I decided to play with the characteristics that the original Echo had, but change her into a dog. Echo is disabled, lonely, yearned for attention/affection, and got rejected. This is a more modern take and incorporates a completely different location. I put in a few quotes such as “Is anyone here?” to resemble the original version. Most importantly, instead of Echo rotting away I wanted her to have a happier ending.

Reading Notes: Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Part B

Echo and Narcissus by John William Waterhouse in 1903
Interrupting the snakes and magically changing sex was a strange intro to grasp. New characters pop up out of nowhere.

The section about Echo’s speech was my favorite to read thus far. The idea is genius! Though she is only able to repeat the last words spoken, she makes an impact with what she can say. It must be lonely waiting for Narcissus to speak first then to have him reject her once he sees her. Her poor and helpless soul. I can possible change this up and instead of an echo I could have a loyal dog who always reciprocates love and affection.

There are many emotions expressed but vain and pain seem to reappear the most. Dated words such as “quenched” and “tomb” are used.

Again things are very described with great details. Can create an image in my head instead of just reading countless words.

Women seem to get taken advantage of for their beauty and bodies a lot.

Reading Notes: Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Part A

This is speaking about all kinds of gods and goddesses. There are many run-on descriptions; the sentence can take up to four to five lines. Leaves, dirt, shore, air, and etc. are written about as though they are alive and moving.

The first rape part threw me off big time. I did not understand what was happening. The second occurrence of rape also did not seem necessary or maybe it should not be called rape. Why is there no consent here…

The name Phoebus reminds me of Phoebe on Friends. I like the section in The Palace of the Sun where it talks about Day, Hour, Winter, and Autumn as people. I can just imagine them in my head. Having a spinoff of those characters would be cool to read.

Earth Destructed by PeteLinforth

Earth Complains really interested me because there are so many issues happening on real earth and in a way earth does deserve to complain. All the destruction humans cause is slowly putting the world in shambles. The dialogue for Earth’s complaint could actually be a real concern. Earth is going to die if we don’t do anything to fix our mistakes.

Growth Mindset

Challenge by Arya Ziai

I have not heard of the growth mindset or of Carol Dweck before this. The concept is brilliantly eye opening. I am guilty of not focusing on schoolwork as much as a should because I waste my time overthinking all my possibilities, but this semester I am determined to improve and take on challenges. Challenges encourage learning and growth. My biggest struggle is prioritizing schoolwork, family, work, and a social life, so it is my personal goal to achieve a high GPA this semester to make up for my previous lousy semester.

Time Strategies

Tomorrow by Seaternity
The class has just started, but I have come to a realization that procrastination is a terrible habit that should not be done with this course or any other class in general. The blog posts take time and can’t be done in a quick manner. I am going to admit that procrastinating is one of my weakest flaws. In How to Beat Procrastination, they mentioned to confront the downside of inaction. That really resonated with me; I avoid the consequences of procrastinating at all costs. Why do it now when I can put it off until tomorrow? I need to realize the pros of starting something as soon as possible for the best results.

Reading Options

I love reading about tragic love stories, so as soon as I read the part about Zeus’s disastrous love affair I was lured in. I do not know much about this topic, but the overview mentioned Zeus and Phaethon which are familiar names to me. Sadly, the main thing I think of for Zeus is the character in the movie Hercules.

Siddhartha Gautama by Sacca

Other: The Life of Buddha
When I was in middle school and high school I attended a Vietnamese Buddhist youth group. I did not learn much about Buddhism itself because I attended the temple to make friends and learn Vietnamese. Siddhartha Gautama, enlightenment, and nirvana are familiar to me; however, a lot of other information will be new to me. I am interested to learn more because of my background.

Other: Chinese Fairy Tales
As well as being Vietnamese, I am part Chinese. There is nothing better than learning about fairy tales to be more enriched on a culture. I have seen tons of movies and shows growing up that most likely derived from some of these stories. I am excited to see if any of them are familiar to me.

Storybook Favorites

Chandler, Rachel, and Monica listening to a story.
(Source: weheartit)

To start off, this is such a clever idea! The introduction actually introduces all the real characters of Friends and briefly mentions their typical hang out location. The descriptions warm my heart up because I am a huge Friends fanatic. The television series named each episode as “The one with ____”, and the writer of this page also named each story accordingly. I greatly appreciate that. It is amusing to see how the stories are based off of ancient legends, which turn to a realistic Friends episode/story. The design of the page is simple and fitting.

Upon first impressions, the pages give off a mysterious and eerie feel which draws me in more. The design compliments the stories and idea very well. The introduction describes a spin on the traditional happy ending to fairy tales, and that is a really interesting idea. I wanted to continue reading because the writer draws you in with suspense of the unknown. It is a very unique approach to something so classic. There is something slightly satisfying about reading a fairy tale that is more on the realistic side because real life does not always have happy endings.

Originally clicking on the link I expected a page that was more luxurious because of the original Gossip Girl television show; however, the idea is precious. The words on the side bar were a little difficult to navigate because the color almost blends in with the background as well. The introduction is spot on perfect! It brought me flashbacks to the show. It built my eagerness to read more about the juicy gossip of Hawaii legends. Sadly the background affected the way I read things because it gave off a dated vibe and I was imagining a more modern take, but that might have been what the writer was going for.

Introduction of a Dogless Dog Lover

Me! Personal photo taken by Madison Curley.
Hello! My name is Sheena Nguyen. I am a junior Advertising major with a General Business minor at the University of Oklahoma. Originally coming into college my parents were against me focusing on an Advertising career because they thought it was too unstable and deceiving, so I previously attempted to get a Marketing major. I realized that I want to be creative and design graphics/videos, but marketing did not include any of that. Regardless of what my parents wanted me to do I am in college to do what best fits me. I switched to advertising as my focus, and I love it!

I am a music freak and have a variety of genres that I enjoy listening to. If I had unlimited money you would never see me at school because I would attend as many concerts as possible. One minute I could be listening to Kodaline and the next I’ll be switching to Chance the Rapper. A song that's been stuck in my head is Your Shirt by Chelsea Cutler.

In addition to my love of music, I also love traveling; however, I sadly do not have the funds to go everywhere I want to. It is my personal goal to someday find a job which will allow me to travel across the nation or even across the world. Last semester, I was able to visit New York City for an immersion trip with Lindsey + Asp (a school run advertising and public relations firm). It was incredibly beautiful, but I never expected New York to smell so awful!

Any and all kinds of dogs are my favorite. I’m currently not allowed to have dogs at my apartment, so I am very deprived of puppy love at the moment. Nevertheless, my guilty pleasure is watching dog videos on Instagram and Facebook. I follow about 15-20 dogs on Instagram because why not? Dogs are the ultimate stress relievers.

(Sorry, I added so many visual items! I’ll update my intro as the semester goes on)

Week 1 Story: I Doubt My Fire is Out

I doubt, I doubt, my fire is out;
My little wife isn’t at home;
I’ll saddle my dog, and I’ll bridle my cat,
And I’ll go fetch my little wife home.

~ ~ ~

After years of endless fighting and bickering, I realized I could not live this way any longer. My husband will not listen to my words or even look me in my eyes, so I decided it was time to start a brand new chapter in my life. I packed my bags and left without a single word of goodbye.

We never got to travel or see the world like we planned. He was always tied down to his job. It was lonely coming home from work and no one being there to greet me for hours. My husband used to make empty promises saying we will someday be able to go here and there, but after so many years he stopped mentioning those hopes and dreams. They meant nothing to him anymore. The first of many signs our relationship was withering away.

It was time for my fresh start. It was always my dream to explore Europe. It was supposed to be our dream… but my husband probably does not mind I did not go with him. He barely came home to see me anyways, and the only time we saw each other we fought like no other. The smallest things will turn into a fight we never expected. How does that happen if you love someone? Shouldn’t we get along?

Two weeks passed and not a single phone call from my husband. I guess our fire really is out. No sparks are left to even fight for me to come back. Deep down I was hoping he would come after me.

The following week I started noticing small gifts and trinkets next to me when I woke up. There were no notes or signs of anyone that left those for me, but I kept every single item.

One night, I was roaming the streets of Venice, and I felt as though someone was following me. I turned back, and much to my surprise it was my husband. I doubt, I doubt, our fire is out.

Author’s Note: This story is based on the nursery rhyme “I Doubt, I Doubt, My Fire is Out” quoted above. I added my own twist on the story by expanding it into the woman’s point of view instead of the original husband’s. It shows a different perspective. I enjoy watching romance movies, and those typically include a struggling scene that ends with a happy ending.

Favorite Place: San Francisco, California

From the bustling city to the calming sea breeze, San Francisco is my favorite place to be. I have only been able to visit once, but I know someday in the future I will go back and possibly move there. There is just something about the city that is incredibly inviting.

You wake up to a fog covering the whole city, and it is nothing like the fog we experience in Oklahoma. Once the San Francisco fog lifts, that is when you know the day is off to a beautiful start. You can go across town to be embraced by the ocean air or get lost in the crooked and colorful streets. Though the roads are not too difficult to navigate I somehow managed to get lost anywhere I went; however, that experience made me fall in love with the city even more. San Francisco is a city with diverse personalities and thousands of friendly faces. I can't wait to go back someday and experience this all over again.
