Introduction of a Dogless Dog Lover

Me! Personal photo taken by Madison Curley.
Hello! My name is Sheena Nguyen. I am a junior Advertising major with a General Business minor at the University of Oklahoma. Originally coming into college my parents were against me focusing on an Advertising career because they thought it was too unstable and deceiving, so I previously attempted to get a Marketing major. I realized that I want to be creative and design graphics/videos, but marketing did not include any of that. Regardless of what my parents wanted me to do I am in college to do what best fits me. I switched to advertising as my focus, and I love it!

I am a music freak and have a variety of genres that I enjoy listening to. If I had unlimited money you would never see me at school because I would attend as many concerts as possible. One minute I could be listening to Kodaline and the next I’ll be switching to Chance the Rapper. A song that's been stuck in my head is Your Shirt by Chelsea Cutler.

In addition to my love of music, I also love traveling; however, I sadly do not have the funds to go everywhere I want to. It is my personal goal to someday find a job which will allow me to travel across the nation or even across the world. Last semester, I was able to visit New York City for an immersion trip with Lindsey + Asp (a school run advertising and public relations firm). It was incredibly beautiful, but I never expected New York to smell so awful!

Any and all kinds of dogs are my favorite. I’m currently not allowed to have dogs at my apartment, so I am very deprived of puppy love at the moment. Nevertheless, my guilty pleasure is watching dog videos on Instagram and Facebook. I follow about 15-20 dogs on Instagram because why not? Dogs are the ultimate stress relievers.

(Sorry, I added so many visual items! I’ll update my intro as the semester goes on)

  1. Everyone in group 6 is an ad major somehow! I work for L+A too!
I really want to ask how you justified the picture of your NYC group to the right and positioned the text around it. The layout of this whole post is really nice. Your blog already looks great, I haven’t even messed with the formatting on mine yet!

  2. I am so glad you found a major you are happy with, Sheena! And advertising has so many good intersections with this class, since a big part of advertising is telling a story. I sometimes bookmark ads that seem to me really good at telling a story; one of my all-time favorites is the Travelers Insurance dog ... I love that one! Since you are a fan of dogs, I bet you know this one already, but if not, I know you will like it!

I wish this class could magically provide travel to all the countries that the readings come from, but in the absence of being able to really go there, reading stories is a form of travel in the imagination, so I hope you will have fun with that this semester until you get a chance to hit the real road and does more traveling in the future.

  3. Hello Sheena! Another advertising major in our little group. I am starting to think this was done on purpose as I know Taylor and myself are also Advertising majors. Marketing was also a passion of mine but I am graphic designer at heart so that is why I chose advertising as well so I could be more involved in the creative side of the industry.Hello Sheena! 4. Hi Sheena, nice to meet you! I’m glad you are now doing what you really want to do and enjoying it! I am the same way with music! I listen to everything from Christian, country, rock and rap! I love it all! We also share a love for dogs but who doesn’t haha! I have lots of dogs back home but I was the same way in college where I never had any dogs. It was brutal!

  5. Hi! Sounds like a fun major and by looking at your blog, you are obviously great at designing things to look really nice! Okay I am totally with you on music taste and love of dogs...ha my introduction is basically a shrine to my dog. I am sure with your job you could work wherever you want in the world! It would be so fun to travel and see the world! I have never even been out of the country so traveling is definitely on my bucket list as well!

  6. Gotta say I know the feeling of having parents that wanted me to go into a career I didn't like, haha. If I recall right, they wanted me to be a doctor no matter what, but I guess they'll have to settle with an engineer :). As for traveling, I'm sure advertising has a LOT of jobs that come with the opportunity (or maybe requirement) to travel around the country or even the world. Neat that you went to NYC too, and yeah it doesn't smell so great, especially on trash days where the bags pile up 4 feet in the air..

  7. Hey Sheena it is nice to meet you. That is awesome that you are finally getting to study what you wanted. I actually really like Chance the Rapper so we have that in common. I will have to go check out the song 7 because I am always looking for new music. I too am a dog lover. I actually switched apartments in order to get my dog! It is more expensive but so worth it. Hope you have a great semester. Nice to meet you!

  8. Hi Shenna,
I absolutely love dogs too! My parents have always been against getting a family pet so I have been without a dog my entire life. I am just waiting for the day that I graduate and get a job so that I can afford to own a dog. My favorite breeds are Alaskan Malamute and Samoyed they are both just so fluffy and amazing!

  9. Hey Sheena, it's nice to meet you! I think it's great that you found a major that you are really passionate about and enjoy doing. I understand how you feel when it comes to traveling. I also wish I could visit all the cool places I have in mind, but unfortunately, I don't have the money to do so yet. Hopefully in a few years I'll have a solid career and be able to save up for vacations!

  10. Hi Sheena! I don't know that we've met before, but if we have, I'm sure it was in Gaylord. I think it's great that you chose to pursue a major that allowed you to be more creative. That's what Gaylord is all about. I wish I had honestly taken some marketing classes, but oh well. I'm glad you got to travel with Lindsey + Asp! What a great student-run agency we have in Gaylord. I hope you had the best time. I'm sure I will see you around Gaylord. :)

  11. Hey Sheena, its great to meet you. Its to bad that your parents disprove of your chosen career path, maybe you can prove them wrong about it? At the same time I think it is great that you still want to pursue your passion with advertising. On the topic of dogs, however, I must disagree. I prefer cats or cat videos as I do not have one of those ditsy felines at the moment.

  12. Hi Sheena! I'm a Professional Writing major, and most of my family members haven't figured out what I'm going to do with that. I really like 7! I've never heard it before. Have you ever heard the song The Match by Eastern Sea? It is one of my favorites. I love tons of different music types as well. Dogs are wonderful! I hate that my apartment doesn't allow pets either. One day though!

  13. Hey Sheena! I am guilty of the dog invasion on Instagram as well, and I have no shame! It brightens my day every time I get distracted from studying and see a dog on my feed. I am currently listening to the song you recommended and WOW I love it. I am into "weirder" music, aka indie, folk etc. and this song is right up my alley!

  14. Hello! I'm glad that you enjoy your major and chose what you enjoyed instead of what your parents wanted. I have a huge variety of music genres I like, too! It's so weird when people ask what music you like because I never know what to answer.

I hope you get to travel a lot soon! And that you get many dogs so you can have all the puppy love you want B).

  15. Hey Sheena! It's nice to meet you! I admire your courage to change your major to something you are passionate about and that fits you rather than staying with a major your parents want you to do! I, like you, have the travel bug! I would love to get to go everywhere! I also am deprived of puppy love and take every opportunity I have to pet a pup or visit family dogs! I hope you get a dog soon!

  16. Hey Sheena! I love that you have the ability to chose what you want to do and now what your parents want you to do! I love meeting people who are also majors at Gaylord college! I find that this allows me to get to know people whose passion is similar to mine! I also adore dogs and constantly get distracted if I ever see them at someones house!

  17. Hey Sheena! I share your love for adverse music! I looked at my phone usage in the settings, and my time spent was over 40% on Spotify.... I don't know if I should be ashamed or proud? I think it's cool that you like to go to concerts so much too. Maybe you can mix your love of concerts and travel someday and go see musicians and artists on tour! Good luck this semester!

  18. Hi Sheena! I, too, would love to spend all of my days at concerts! Nothing compares to the atmosphere of being there. I am also glad you switched majors to something you liked. My parents had pressured me into being an engineer, but I switched to accounting and have not looked back since! Luckily, they support whatever decisions I make. I also wish I had the money to travel. There are so many places I would like to visit, but it will probably be a while before I get that opportunity. Good luck finishing this semester!

  19. Hi Sheena! It is officially great to meet you! I've commented on your storybook twice already and am finally getting to your introduction. You seem like a bright lady and have an incredible future ahead of you! I've never met so much advertising majors until this course and I think it's awesome, as well as brave. It definitely can be tough not gaining so much of your parents permission to do what you truly love, I go through the same thing, but we're blessed enough that they come around for us in the end.
You have great taste in music and I can totally relate to music/concert hopping. I can't get enough of it! I am also a traveler at heart without the funds, but somehow I manage a few trips here and there as well. And I love dogs! I have a corgi that I got about a year ago last March. Time flies and they grow up too fast! If you want, I don't mind letting you hang with him, he's smart and such a good dog! It was great meeting you though, good luck with the rest of your time at OU and after!

  20. How did you come up with the most creative blog name ever? I love it! It's very nice to meet this little piece of you. If I had unlimited money I probably wouldn't be in school either!! LOL I'm just in for the degree. I completely understand being a doglegs dog lover. My Cookie passed away last summer and it's really not the right time for a new one... but one day!!

  21. Sheena! I think your love of music and traveling is great! I love traveling too and hope to have enough flexibility in the future to get to move around and hopefully do a bit of traveling too. I also love puppies, but luckily I have my own to love on lots and lots! Though, I too follow about 20 different dogs on instagram-what better way to liven up the feed right?!

  22. Hi Sheena! You have great taste in music, and I like how diverse you are with it. I think it’s super important to follow what makes you happy because you’ll find your life to be so much more fulfilling when you enjoy what you get to do. I wish you all the very best with advertising, and I hope you get have puppy love very soon! Haha.

  23. Hi Sheena! I applaud you for choosing to follow the path that you think is best for you, regardless of your parents’ opinions. That is a very hard thing to do sometimes, but it is very important to do so and very admirable! I am so glad you mentioned that New York smells so bad! I thought the exact same thing when I visited there! I loved it, but no one ever mentions that part when they are raving about how wonderful it is. I could not imagine living there. I think it is awesome that you follow so many dogs on Instagram, and I enjoyed your visual items! It was nice to meet you!

  24. Hey,

Its nice to see you are a lover of travel because so am I. Regardless of whether you get a job that allows you to travel abroad you should totally save up and go. I think its really awesome you chose to follow the path that you felt best suits you instead of choosing something your parents wanted. I think because of that you will find a lot of happiness in the future! It is nice to meet you!
